  • Notes
    • In the vicinity of the towering Iser Mountains where his mill was ground by the downward rushing waters of the River Queis (now known as the river Kwisa) lay the small, old village Holzkirch (Koscielnik, Poland). Here lived in the first half of the 16th century our family father Nickol Duhnemann who labored as a simple farmer. He and his wife Magdelena had two sons. Of the older son, Nickol, we do not know if he was the actual son of Nickol Duhnemann, but of the younger one, Matz, we are certain that he was Nickol's son At the time when Nickol Duhnemann grew up in one of the small spread-out farmsteads of Holzkirch, the surrounding countryside, like all of the Oberlausitz, belonged to the Bohemian crown and was beginning to recover from the Hussite invasion. Since the strong city of Lauban (Luban, Poland) lay only an hour's journey away, the vegetable farmers could find a profitable market there. Also, the heavily traversed route leading from Prague to Lauban and Görlitz made it possible to bring earnings home. Nevertheless since both sons of Nickol Duhnemann left their hometown to make their home in the nearby village of Kerzdorf or in Lauban itself, it may be concluded that the elder was not a farmer by occupation. As it was previously the case, there is today a graveyard in Holzkirch (Koscielnik) surrounding the village church, bounded on one side by the parsonage. Among the old gravestones there were no Duhnemanns or Dienemanns to be found (as of 1880-1933). It was probably a simple wooden cross used on Nickol's grave which at that time he was entitled to as a simple farmer. The name Duhnemann is probably read Dünemann since the same people wrote Dienemann in other areas.
